3 Worrisome Ductless HVAC Noises in Mount Washington, KY
In recent years, an increasing number of homeowners in Mount Washington, KY have turned to ductless HVAC systems for comfort. Ordinarily, they operate very quietly. However, if your ductless system begins making any of the following three noises, don’t ignore them.
1. Hissing Sounds
If you hear a hissing sound near any of your system’s indoor air handlers or its outdoor unit, something’s wrong. Typically, hissing is a sign that there’s a leak somewhere in the system’s refrigerant lines. The hissing results from air bubbles entering those lines and passing through your system.
Refrigerant leaks require immediate HVAC repair. Running with low refrigerant levels will hamper your system’s cooling and heating ability. It also creates additional strain on the compressor in your system, possibly leading to its premature failure.
2. Rattling Noises
Rattling is another sound you might hear from your ductless HVAC when it needs a repair. This noise may point to a loose or damaged component vibrating or striking other system parts. If you do not address this, the rattling might lead to additional damage to other components.
If the rattling seems to come from one of your air handlers, it could be because of a loose blower wheel. Or it could be that the bearings on the blower wheel need lubrication. Rattling from your outdoor unit could result from a loose cover or debris entering the case.
3. Buzzing Sounds
Finally, buzzing noises emanating from your mini-split’s outdoor unit are a sure sign of trouble. A failed or declining capacitor is the most likely culprit. Loose electrical connections can also cause buzzing sounds as electricity arcs between metal parts.
Since buzzing sounds indicate electrical issues, turning off your ductless system when you hear them is wise. You should also avoid touching your outdoor unit while waiting for repairs. Some components in the outdoor unit store electricity, and you could receive a shock if the unit’s case becomes energized.
Ductless mini-split HVAC systems are an excellent comfort option in Mount Washington, KY. However, if yours starts making unusual noises, call Birkhead Co. immediately to schedule a ductless HVAC service appointment.
